How to Grow, Attract and Retain Talent in 2016 Our friends at INSEAD have released the 2015-2016 edition of its annual Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI). The study was produced in collaboration with the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore (HCLI) and Adecco Group. Movement of talent and economic prosperity This years theme of Talent Attraction and International Mobility focuses on findings linked to the significant correlation between movement of talent and economic prosperity. Mobility is vital to fill skill gaps; and a high proportion of innovative, entrepreneurial people were born or studied abroad. It is hence not surprising that top ranking countries have positioned themselves as desirable destinations for high-skilled workers. Faced with new types of migration flows, decision makers need to shape policies and strategies to address both the immediate concerns of their constituencies and the longer-term interests of their citizens. What countries rank best? The top three countries ranked on talent competitiveness are Switzerland at number one, followed by Singapore and Luxembourg in second and third places, respectively, remaining the same as in 2014. Countries ranked in the top 10 clearly demonstrated openness in terms of talent mobility close to 25% of the respective populations of Switzerland and Luxembourg were born abroad; the proportion is even 43% in Singapore. The proportion is also significant in the United States (4), Canada (9), New Zealand (11), Austria (15), and Ireland (16). There has been little change in the top 20 since the release of the last edition of the GTCI report, with the exception of Czech Republic (20) entering this group, New Zealand improving its performance significantly, while Canada and Ireland saw modest declines. Specific themes around mobility Through analyses and comparisons of the scores registered by individual countries, a number of patterns and similarities emerge, converging towards eight key messages relating to this years theme: Mobility has become a key ingredient of talent development: creative talent cannot be fully developed if international mobility and brain circulation are not encouraged. The migration debate needs to move from emotions to solutions: countries will find it advantageous to address movements of people through a talent perspective. Management practices make a difference in attracting talent: apart from monetary incentives and standard of living, another important differentiator in talent attraction is the professionalism of management and investment in employee development. Jobs and people move While people continue to move to jobs and opportunities, jobs are now moving to where the talent is: some countries have started to attract the attention of international investors because of creative talent at a reasonable cost: China, South Korea, Philippines and Vietnam in the Asia Pacific region; Malta, Slovenia, Cyprus and Moldova in the European region; Turkey, Jordan and Tunisia in the MENA region; and Panama in Central America. Talent magnets are emerging New talent magnets are emerging: While the US, Singapore and Switzerland have long been attractive to talent, competition may become fierce among emerging talent hubs such as Indonesia, Jordan, Chile, South Korea, Rwanda and Azerbaijan, as more aspire to join these increasingly attractive destinations. Robots and algorithms move in Low-skilled workers continue to be replaced by robots, while knowledge workers are displaced by algorithms: as mobility continues to be redefined in new ways, notably through technology, knowledge workers are affected and this shift signals that entire sectors of activity may be displaced. Some people may have to work virtually for different employers from their homes, while others have to retrain and move far to obtain jobs. Talent circulation is the new normal In a world of talent circulation, cities and regions are becoming critical players in the competition for global talent: agility and branding of cities seem to be more critical differentiators than size as an increasing number of large cities adopt imaginative policies to attract global talent. Lack of vocational skills in emerging markets Scarce vocational skills continue to handicap emerging countries: gaps in vocational skills continue to exist in emerging countries such as China, India, and South Africa, and particularly in Brazil where talent capabilities show signs of weakening on all fronts. This is also true for some high-income countries such as Ireland, Belgium and Spain. This years GTCI country coverage has improved, allowing the report to cover 109 countries (versus 93 countries in 2014), representing 83.8 percent of the worlds population and 96.2 percent of the worlds GDP.

Are Women Really Getting Equal Opportunities in Todays World The word Opportunity literally means âtime or a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.â So if we want to scrutinize the idea as to whether the women of today are getting equal opportunities, we need to look at whether the time or set of circumstances are favorable for them in comparison to men. The time is definitely right to be a female. Historically female gender has always stood marginalized from society, but things are changing. More women empowerment groups and opinions now thrive within the community in most developed countries than ever. Firms are now formulating increasingly mature policies to address the issues of gender inequality, equal pay, and harassment. These policies would help more females to enter the workforce and perform on the same scale as the opposite gender. If you look at the âSet of Circumstances,â i.e., whether or not women have equal opportunities, the scenario becomes complicated and this is where the problem lies. Are Women Really Getting Equal Opportunities in Todays World? The Main Problem: Normalization Inequality ends where Normalization begins. Women today are definitely starting to get equal opportunities thanks in part to change in mindsets and opinions, but we are certainly not considered equal to men. Women might be more prominent in workplaces today as compared to previous times, and some might even be getting equal or even better pay than men, but we canât conclude that every woman has equal opportunities in todayâs world. Equal opportunity for all women is something that would only happen the day we stop considering women âSomething Elseâ as compared to men. Normalization of the scenario where males and females are treated on an equal basis is the only way all women can be guaranteed opportunities on equal footing. But currently, the scenario is far from perfect. Significant progress has been made, but discrimination remains as exposed in the recent high-profile cases related to Uber Google. People still believe that women are not equal to men in a variety of ways. When we are given a particular right like equal pay, itâs seen as a hassle people have to go out of their way for. Somehowitâs not considered something that should have been there in the first place? A scenario where a woman has equal opportunity in the workplace or society should be a mainstream concept and not a utopian aspiration we hope to meet someday. Notable women like Sheryl Sandberg, Oprah Winfrey, Janet Yellen and other countless more, have risen to powerful and respectable positions within their lives and careers. This shows that not only should women get equal opportunities in our society because itâs just the right thing to do, but also because we can and do serve in equal pomp as men (obviously). We cant change the past but we can still shape is how the lives of women pan out in the future. For more women to join this cause, we need to instill in them the qualities and character traits to guarantee more success. These qualities and characteristics encompass a wide variety of behaviors but are not limited to making smart financial decisions, pursuing entrepreneurial actions, being able to manage personal and professional lives, being on top of your fashion game having a more appealing, empowered halo around your personality. While having said that: Are We on The Right Track Right Now? Probably not. The United States, in particular, has slipped down in the gender equality rankings, from being ranked 23rd in 2006 to a disappointing 45th position in 2016, according to a report published by The World Economic Forum. While we have made tremendous progress in the area of providing women with equal opportunity in education galloping from being 66th in that area in 2006 to the number one spot in 2016, we have plummeted from the 3rd spot to the 26th spot when it comes to equality in economic participation opportunity. This is a trend which shows that while we have made our universities more welcoming, we are on the wrong side of the road when it comes down to considering women as equals in the workplace. The time might probably be right, but circumstances certainly arenât, and thatâs where the answer to achieving gender equality will lie in the upcoming future. We need to empower women and encourage them to dream big and have even greater aspirations because itâs only women themselves who can prove that they are worthy of equality. The time is perfect to achieve that and make the circumstances right for future generations to come and live in a world free of discrimination.

7 Interview Questions that will Blow Employers Away A common mistake that many job hunters make is to assume that the interview process is a one-sided conversation its not. Instead of just being prepared to answer tricky questions for an hour or so, the interviewee should have some questions of their own up their sleeve. Its almost certainly going to be frowned upon if the candidate has nothing but a blank expression when asked, do you have any questions? Dont ask about flexible working and salary (at least not in the first interview) but do ask some or all of these seven interview questions which will blow employers away. What do you expect me to accomplish in the first six to 12 months here and what is the one thing I cant fail at in the first year? This question should give you an immediate picture of what the job entails and how your performance will be judged as soon as you step through the door. Its a real eye-opener for the candidate: how tough is this role going to be? Are you taking on something akin to Mission Impossible? At this stage do you have any doubts about my suitability for this role? This can be an absolute killer of a question if its answered candidly by the hiring manager. Of course, they might brush it aside and prefer to keep their thoughts private but if they do open up and tell you what (if anything) theyre unsure about then you have the chance, there and then, to address those concerns and further state your case. If that happens you can leave the room knowing you really have done as much as you can to put yourself in the driving seat. Whats the history of this position? Is this is a new role, created due to work demand, or a fresh direction by the company? If it is, is the commitment there to develop it, is there a long term budget behind it? You may also be able to discuss performance of the position and the department it sits within: historically, how has this role contributed to the overall success of the business? What are the top 3 characteristics of your superstars at this company? Taken from this article on CBS News this is a smart question. By asking about the qualities of the star performers at the company it demonstrates the level at which you are setting your own goals high. Not just aiming to do the job competently, but to storm it and emulate the best individuals. Thats how you value yourself. What happened to the last two people who had this role? A bit too inquisitive? Perhaps, but as youre applying for this particular role you have a right to know the experiences of your predecessors. The answer could be revealing, and what it is will probably lead on to another. Were they promoted within the company (if so, thats promising to see performance rewarded)? Did they leave the company to go elsewhere (if so, why did they find their progress hampered here?) If they were dismissed, was that because they failed to meet certain expectations? It might be that expectations are too high. What plans will be in place for my training and development? As suggested here. Remember, this isnt just about you working your socks off for the company, its a reciprocal partnership where they invest in you and nurture your training and development as an individual. You want to grow and mature your skills with this company. If you get an unsatisfactory answer here it may give pause for thought. What are the next steps in the interview process? Perfect to conclude with, so that you know where you stand in terms of the timeframe involved. Theres no point in fretting and losing sleep because you havent heard anything in a week if the person leading the recruitment process has first interviews spanning three weeks and then a fortnights holiday before contacting candidates. Get an idea of when second interviews might be scheduled and final decisions made.

How to Prepare to Leave Your Job (in 3 easy steps) - AND a free class! - When I Grow Up Thats it! Youâve had enough of your job and are planning to escape from the golden handcuffs. You mightve written your resignation letter and are waiting for the day you get to give it to your manager with a triumphant smile. You mightve told your spouse that youre gonna give your notice by such-and-such an important date (the holidays, your next birthday, after your annual bonus, etc). You mightve started taking action on your dream career and are trying to supplement your income now. But what can you do to prepare to leave your job in order to work on your creative biz? (No, rolling your eyes and/or complaining doesnt count.) STEP 1: Take a long, hard look at your finances. Ive never worked with a client where money didnt come into the picture. We often use it as a fear-based roadblock, saying well never save or make enough (or we have to save or make too much!). Whadda convenient excuse to not take action, huh? Well, knock it off! Block out an hour on your calendar right now for a finance date, and jot down what you need to make every month to cover your bills, feed yourself and have at least a bit of a life. Write down that monthly number and times it by however many months itll take for you to breathe easy about whats in the bank. If youre having trouble, you can, instead, think of your financial cushion in terms of the number youâre already familiar with: your current salary. I personally looked at it that way because I knew the paycheck I was making covered the bills and then some, and I was able to figure out pretty easily that my five monthsâ severance could last for eight or so if I wasnât going nutso in the buttso with my spending. ( And yes, Im trying to make nutso in the buttso a thing feel free to use it.) STEP 2: Open a separate savings account for your business and make it automatic. You can open a free account at Capital One 360, and set up an automatic transfer to build up your financial cushion. Want to save $20,000 and have a target date to give your notice as November 2016? Then youll need $1100/month in that account (or maybe $500/month + bonuses + birthday money + client work?). Whatever you can put away, set it up to happen weekly, biweekly or monthly without you having to do a thing. STEP 3: Get clear on your Phase One, and take action on it every day. What are the non-money things that are non-negotiables for you to start and/or launch your biz? For me, it was a professionally designed website (I didnt have one for the first 2ish years of my business), a secure sense that people in the world knew who I was (I wouldve done better with a measurable goal, i.e. 3 consultation calls and 2 new clients/month), and becoming an LLC. For you, it might be a high-quality printer, $100/month in sales, and an Etsy shop with 5 products. To get to your Phase One pieces, jot down what you feel you need, want, and/or should have and only keep the non-negotiable needs! Everything else can come later. Then, do something every day to move forward with your Phase One so the finish line becomes tangible! I know that these steps seem big, but you can map this out (I like to call it a SNAP Safety Net Action Plan) in just a few hours, and theyll keep you on target for the weeks, months, or years to come. Then, when its time to hand in that resignation letter youve keep hidden, youll feel comfortable and confident that youve built a strong foundation for a successful business!
